Neurostructural Chiropractic Treatment for Vertigo and Dizziness
Vertigo can be a very disconcerting feeling, with typical symptoms including a stationary ‘spinning’ sensation along with nausea. It can occur whilst standing up or whilst seated, making it difficult to go about your daily routine, social and professional life. In many cases, vertigo and dizziness have been linked to imbalances within the neck or cervical spine. Neurostructural chiropractic care may be able to assist in correcting any imbalances and reducing your symptoms, enabling you to return to your usual routine with confidence.
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a form of dizziness which is caused by a problem within the inner ear (peripheral vertigo) or neck/spine (cervical vertigo). It can also be triggered by Meniere’s disease or vestibular neuritis. People of all ages can experience vertigo, though it is most common amongst people over the age of 65.
Whilst vertigo is not a disease, it is a very disconcerting condition. Vertigo attacks can occur suddenly, and are most commonly triggered by abrupt head movements, sudden pressure changes or the presence of inflammation in the body. People who experience vertigo often mention that the room appears to be spinning, or they themselves seem to be spinning despite being in a stationary position.
Vertigo attacks can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, with some people experiencing them more often than others.
Causes of Vertigo
People with neck and spinal imbalances may experience vertigo. Usually this is a result of neck or head trauma, which has led to the damage of nerve pathways and disrupted the natural curve of the spine.
Stroke, diabetes, prolonged bed rest, arrhythmia and some medications can also cause vertigo.
Symptoms of Vertigo
Along with dizziness and spinning sensations, people may experience:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Feeling off balance
- Headache
- Strange sensations such as ringing in the ear
- Tinnitus
- Sweating
Potential Benefits of Neurostructural Chiropractic Care
Willetton Chiropractic have a wealth of experience in treating secondary conditions related to neuro-structural abnormalities, with vertigo/dizziness being one of the more common issues. Once we have determined the cause of your symptoms, we will develop a tailored treatment plan which typically involves spinal manipulation and use of the Epley Manoeuvre to help improve nervous system function and balance. This is achieved by attempting to realign spinal structure and upper neck muscles, in addition to clearing any accumulated debris inside the vestibulocochlear apparatus which serves as the “balance centre”.
Many people receive positive benefits from neuro-structural chiropractic, however some cases may need to be referred to more suitable health professionals. If you have been experiencing severe or recurrent vertigo, it’s worthwhile getting in touch with Willetton Chiropractic to see how we miay be able to help.
